A question for the artistic minded here.

April 17th, 2008 by Joshua Normal

I’m curious to hear other people’s opinions of this art project. Please click the link, read the full article and let me know your reaction before reading my initial reaction below.

Yale Daily News - For senior, abortion a medium for art, political discourse

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself “as often as possible” while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

Finished reading the article? Below is my initial take on the whole thing.

Personally I am rather disturbed by the whole idea of the exhibit. It’s not what will be on display that disturbs me. For all I care an artist could make a display of aborted fetuses. It’s more the fact that the artist made the conception and abortion of these patches of cells with so little feeling or concern and it seems without a very specific purpose for doing so.

I’ve always been in favor of abortion rights. However, I have always been in favor of responsible abortion rights. Every abortion ends a potential human life. Do I think of it as murder? No I don’t. Do I think that it’s the same as removing a mole or other unwanted growth on your body? No. It’s somewhere between those two though.

Spending 9 months intentionally inseminating yourself and giving yourself abortions in the name of art seems like a lot of time in a morally questionable realm of action. I don’t condemn her for what she did, but I would really like to know exactly what sort of discussion she had hoped to spark with this performance. I’ve often heard the excuse for any questionable art that it was being done to spark discussion of a topic. Unless you are trying to spark discussion of an issue that isn’t well expressed it seems like a redundant and unnecessary act. If there is a particular message you are trying to make or a specific area you want to draw more attention to within the certain subject then you have good reason to try and bring attention to it. Otherwise what was the point. Abortion is a well discussed and very prominent issue in society. There is no need to spark a discussion on abortion, it’s already a raging bonfire. Unless you have something to actually say all you are doing is adding wood to the fire. Creating a discussion is not saying anything.

I’m curious to see how other people feel about this exhibit. I’m sure when it opens next week there will be a huge amount of media attention directed towards it.

Greetings, Professor Falken.

April 4th, 2008 by Joshua Normal

Or maybe it would be more accurate to say goodbye. Yes, that’s right boys and girls its time again to play the Holy Shit Hollywood remake of the week.

This week Hollywood will rape a true classic that taught the world about the glamorous life of a computer hacker in the 1980s. Wargames.

Important lessons here. Used to be computer hackers had to have skills and put forth serious effort to nearly kill millions of people. Today all they have to do is play mumorpugers. So keep that in mind all you WoW players out there. One wrong click and you could possibly wipe out all of civilization.

Other than that we can see that where the original gave us a somewhat realistic view of the technology and behaviors of the era this new one has taken it’s cue from Hackers (the visually fun crapfest with a great soundtrack and Angelina Jolie) by showing something that more or less has no relation to an actual computer (other than a massive power drain due to all the fucking lights these Hollywood douche bags think come on every high tech piece of equipment these days) and calling it one.

In any case this one didn’t even garner a petition to get it on the big screen and thank goodness for that. These days it’s the small things we can be thankful for.

For the Bond fans.

March 28th, 2008 by Joshua Normal

I present you one of the most misleading headlines the Daily Mail has thrown up today.

Original 007 Sean Connery wants to be a James Bond baddie | the Daily Mail

Isn’t that an attention catching headline. It sounds like one of the greatest Bonds wants to come back and give Bond, James Bond what for. There is a minor twinge when the recollection of his role in “The Avengers” but this is a Bond film. Then reality sets in when you read the article.

“I wouldn’t mind coming back as a Bond villain,” (Connery) said. “But I don’t think they would pay me enough money.”

How much does Mr. Connery want to come out of acting retirement? The answer is Ten Million Pounds. This is not the amount someone asks for if they want to do a role. This is the amount someone asks for if they are interested in making headlines and reaffirming the attachment people have between them and a role they played 25 years ago. Well Mr. Connery it worked, well played.
